The Columbus Park Crossing shopping area consists of more than 700,000 square feet of retail space, comprised mostly of large national retailers the center has long been an anchor for attracting new retailers to the Columbus market. Recent additions to the center have brought new retailers to the Fountain City and others are on the way. Here is a quick look at some of the changes that have recently taken place at Columbus Park Crossing.
HOMEGOODS
The former Bed Bath and Beyond store located at 5555 Whittlesey Blvd Suite 1400 closed their doors last year as the chain closed all stores nationwide. Over the past several months the building sat quiet, but a new retailer to the market was brewing quietly since the late winter months. Homegoods, a nationwide home décor retailer is currently renovating more than 25,000 square feet for the stores first location in Columbus. Homegoods opened a store on Opelika Road in Auburn in 2022, marking the first location for the chain in the region.
The parent company of Homegoods TJX currently has a strong presence in Columbus with two Columbus locations. One is located in Cross Country Plaza on Macon Road near Midtown and the other is in the Columbus Park Crossing South Shopping Center located along Whittlesey Blvd. The company also operates a Marshall's store in Columbus Park Crossing.
Residents of Columbus and nearby communities are excited to see the addition of Homegoods to the local market. It is one of many retailers that local residents have been hoping would come to the Fountain City. An opening date for the new location has not yet been made public.
FLOORS & DECOR
Homegoods is not the only home improvement and decoration store to come to Columbus. Atlanta-based Floors & Decor opened a new location in the former Sears building at the shopping center. The new store becomes the first location in the Columbus market and becomes the 14th location in Georgia. The store opened its doors in late June bring more than four dozen new jobs with it to the Columbus area.
Prior to the opening Jesse Hull, the store Chief Executive Merchant said in a press release, “We’re thrilled to announce our newest store location in Columbus,” said Hull. “For more than two decades, Floor & Decor has had the opportunity to serve professionals and homeowners throughout the nation, and we are excited to expand our footprint in the Columbus market with this new location. We look forward to becoming part of the community and welcoming our newest neighbors into our store and making their renovation journeys easier, inspired and more affordable.”
RED LOBSTER
Red Lobster has been a staple in an outparcel space near the intersection of Adams Farm Drive and Whittlesey Blvd in Columbus Park Crossing for nearly two decades. As the company faced financial challenges and was going through bankruptcy procedures it was revealed that the location at 2679 Adams Farm Drive may have been on the chopping block in early June. However the company has exited Chapter 11 and is back stronger than ever after shuttering more than 100 locations nationwide. The Columbus Park Crossing location was spared and is here to stay at the shopping center. The company also operates a location on 13th Street near Midtown Columbus that is also remaining open.
CONN'S HOMEPLUS
While some companies have been able to able to fare well, others have not been as lucky. Texas-based Conn's HomePlus, which opened a store in the former Toy's R Us/Babies R Us location in Columbus Park Crossing is presently in the process of liquidating its inventory from the store. The company is shuttering all operations nationwide. There has been no word on any new retailer that may fill the void left by the exit of Conn's.
The Columbus Park Crossing shopping development remains one of the most visited shopping destinations in Columbus. Last year the development added several new tenants including a second location of Spencer's and Nothing Bundt Cakes. In addition there have been several new developments to pop up near the shopping center including a new Dave's Hot Chicken location under construction.
While Columbus Park Crossing is just one of a handful of shopping destinations seeing growth across Columbus it remains one of the most visited.
