HAUNTED COLUMBUS SERIES: Jordan High School

Jordan High School in Columbus is said to be haunted by at least two different ghosts after two tragic accidents at the school.
During the month of October The Chattahoochee Voice will be running a special series of articles about spooky places and local ghost tales around the Chattahoochee Valley.

COLUMBUS, GA: Over the years I think I have heard a ghost story about every high school in the area. It seems as though every student wants their high school to have its own ghost or haunting tale. However, there is one school in Columbus that remains constant in its stories and legends of spooky and haunting activities and that is Jordan High School.

Jordan High School is among the oldest schools in Muscogee County. Jordan is more than a century old and was the first vocational high school in the nation. Being an old building, of course, there will be ghost stories that surround the school located on Howard Avenue in Columbus. Those stories may stem from the creepy feeling some have described when entering the school that some have said feels like entering an old creepy museum.

Like most ghost stories the haunting of Jordan most likely holds no merit and is probably the result of kids telling the same campfire story over the years. However, as the story goes there are two parts of the school that are said to be haunted and two stories associated with the hauntings. Creepy observations follow through to support the urban legends of Jordan's ghost tales.

The first story centers around a haunting in the Auditorium in Jordan High School. As mentioned before most schools say they are haunted and have a haunted Auditorium. The haunting of Jordan's Auditorium has a back story though that is almost like a Columbus-based tale of love and tragedy.

The haunting is said to stem from a girl who was watching a stage performance by her boyfriend on the stage of the auditorium. The girlfriend is said to have yelled her boyfriend's name from the balcony. As she yelled his name something happened that caused her to fall over the balcony and resulted in her death on impact. Her spirit is said to wander the auditorium of Jordan to this day. It is said that you can see her wandering spirit roaming the balcony or the stage.

A second haunting is said to loom in the construction room of the high school. The room is said to be haunted by the spirit of a deceased teenager. According to this tale, a teenager was walking in the construction room one day and a metal rod came loose somehow. The metal rod fell and impaled the teenage boy through the heart. The ghost of that teenager is said to roam the room and you can see the ghost holding its chest as it roams the room and parts of Jordan High School.

The stories appear to be mostly urban legends. However, some who have passed by Jordan High School at night have reported seeing strange occurrences in the high school. Those occurrences have included lights flicking on and off, the shadows of people walking by windows, and the sight of shadow-like figures standing in windows during late hours.

While the haunting of Jordan High School may be nothing more than a popular ghost story it is one that has been carried over for years and years. The stories have become so popular that this ghost tale has made it to our 2019 Haunted Columbus Series.
