18 Killed On Georgia Roadways Over Independence Day Holiday Travel Period

Georgia State Troopers investigate a crash earlier this week on Interstate 85 near the Meriwether and Troup County line. There were more than 500 crashes with 18 deaths reported across the state over the holiday travel period.
ATLANTA, GA- The Georgia Department of Public Safety has announced 18 people were killed over the102-hour Independence Day holiday travel period on roadways across the Peach State.



The holiday travel period began on Friday, June 30, 2023 at 6 p.m. and ran through Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. During the 102-hour period Troopers with the Georgia State Patrol investigated nine fatal crashes across the state. In addition, local agencies including the Atlanta Police Department (2), DeKalb County Police Department (2), Dougherty County Police Department (2), Glynn County Police Department, Paulding County Sheriff's Office, and the Pike County Sheriff's Office also investigated traffic fatalities during the holiday period.

In addition to the 18 deaths reported across the state, GSP reports Troopers investigated more than 500 traffic crashes that resulted in more than 260 injuries. Troopers with the Motor Carrier Compliance Division made 20,989 traffic stops that resulted in more than 12,300 citations and over 15,000 warnings during the travel period.

During the 2022 Independence Day travel period which lasted 78-hours, Troopers report there were 21 fatalities. Last year Troopers investigated more than 390 crashes with more than 200 injuries across the state.
