Man Killed In Wednesday Incident In Columbus Neighborhood

COLUMBUS, GA- The Columbus Police Department's violent crimes unit is investigating a fatal shooting that took place in the East Wynnton area of Columbus on Wednesday afternoon. The shooting resulted in a vehicle accident that closed a residential street for several hours as officers investigated.

According to Columbus Police officers responded to the area of Hood Street near the intersection of Benner Avenue on Wednesday afternoon at 1:47 p.m.

Officer arriving on the scene discovered an overturned vehicle with the victim inside, who was suffering from gunshot injuries. Deputy Coroner Elizabeth Allison was called tot he scene and pronounced the victim deceased at 2:28 p.m.

The victim in the shooting has been identified as 33-year-old Maurice Burton. There has been no confirmation if the victim died as a result of the shooting or the car crash. The case remains under investigation.
