Police Investigate Fatal Friday Night Shooting In Columbus

COLUMBUS, GA- Investigators with the Columbus Police Department are investigating an overnight homicide that claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy. The fatal shooting is the third homicide in Columbus since Wednesday.



Columbus police responded to the Arbor Pointe Apartments on the night of Friday, July 8, 2023, to investigate a shooting in the 1200 block Gazebo Way. A victim was found and transported to Piedmont Hospital in Columbus for treatment.

According to Muscogee County Coroner Bobby Bryan, the victim was pronounced dead at 9:02 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at the Piedmont ICU. Bryan has identified the victim as 16-year-old Bobby Lyons, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the shooting. The victims body will be transported to the State Crime Lab for an autopsy.

The fatal shooting on Friday night is just the latest in a string of violence that has gripped the city in recent days. It is the third homicide in Columbus since Wednesday.

On Wednesday afternoon, 33-year-old Maurice Burton was found shot in a wrecked vehicle on Hood Street. On the following day on Thursday, July 6, 2023, 47-year-old James Mitchell was fatally shot at the Motel 6 on Victory Drive. Columbus Police arrested 19-year-old Jaboree Boone-Scott in connection to the fatal shooting of Mitchell. There has been no arrest or suspect information released at this time in connection to the Burton homicide.

Columbus police have released no further details about the shooting on Friday evening. The case remains under investigation by Columbus Police.
