Strong To Severe Storms Possible Later Today Across Area

COLUMBUS, GA- The Chattahoochee Valley is bracing for the possibility of seeing some stronger storms roll across the area later today. The storms include the risk of various threats ranging from strong winds to a possible tornado or two across the area. The approaching storm system brings the first severe weather risk of 2023 to the area.



The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the area under a level 3 of 5 risk for Thursday, January 12, 2023. An approaching storm system is expected to roll across the area this afternoon and early this evening. As the storm comes through it will have the chance to produce strong to severe thunderstorms.

Officials state that the weather system will include various risks such as strong damaging winds in excess of 60 mph, hail, heavy rain, frequent lightning, and a few possible tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

The level three of five risk includes several larger population centers across Georgia and Alabama including; Columbus, Montgomery, Atlanta, Macon and Birmingham. The greatest threat will be strong damaging winds.


The National Weather Center in Peachtree City has released the following chart that shows the risk of the approaching storm system today.


The storms are expected to roll into area around the 2:00 hour and shoud be out be 8:00 for most of the area.

The storms should begin to come into the area this afternoon and exit during the evening and overnight areas. Behind the storm system temperatures turn cooler and windy for Friday.
