Two Dead After Homicide-Suicide On CSU Main Campus

Officials are investigating a homicide-suicide that took place on the main campus of Columbus State University on Friday, August 18, 2023.
COLUMBUS, GA- Officials are investigating a deadly shooting on the main campus of Columbus State University on Friday morning. The shooting left two people dead in what officials suspect is a homicide-suicide related to a domestic incident.

According to Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan two people were pronounced dead at the scene on the morning of Friday, August 18, 2023. The Muscogee County Coroner has identified the victims as 20-year-old Gisela Pierce and 25-year-old Nathaniel Janik. Both victims were students at Columbus State University according to officials.

Bryan confirms that Pierce was pronounced dead at 10:40 a.m. on Friday on the scene and Janik was also pronounced dead on the scene at 10:40 a.m. The cause of death in both deaths appears to be related to gunshot injuries according to the coroner's office.

Columbus State University sent out at alert to students on Friday morning shortly after the incident. In the statement university officials stated:

Friday morning, university leaders were notified of a gun-related incident on Main Campus near the area of Lenoir Annex. At this time, the threat has been contained and defined as an isolated event. Columbus State University Police are now investigating the matter in partnership with the Columbus Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The case remains under investigation and officials have confirmed there is no threat to students or visitors to CSU's main campus on University Avenue in relation to this incident.
