COLUMBUS, GA- On Friday, April 23, 2021, the new food delivery app, OrderEats, is set to begin service in Columbus. OrderEats was founded by a restaurant owner and businessman who developed the app by keeping the restaurant and customer in mind.

OrderEats is a food delivery app created with restaurant owners and consumers in mind. What separates OrderEats from other services is simple, there are no menu upcharges, no commission fees, a flat delivery rate, and no cost to the restaurant owner.

The goal of OrderEats is to create a food ordering service that is beneficial to the restaurant owner and the customer.

"Helping the Columbus food industry grow and thrive in the aftermath of a global pandemic is why the OrderEats app is such a necessity. COLUMBUS, GA:Columbus has seen itself transition into one of Georgia's top dining destinations in recent years. As local startups have opened and offered a wide variety of food for the Fountain City's tastebuds, one unique sector of Columbus dining has been barbecue and a recent study by Apartmentguide.com shows that Columbus is one of the top cities for barbecue in the nation and home to a wide assortment of barbecue restaurants.

While many think of locations like Memphis, Austin, or St. Louis as the top barbecue destinations in the country, Columbus has a little something unique of its own going on. The rich and robust flavors of local favorites like Country's BBQ, Chester BBQ, 13th Street BBQ, Wynnton Pit BBQ, and dozens of others that dot this city have resulted in Columbus being named as one of the top 25 cities for barbecue restaurants in the United States.

According to Apartmentguide.com, their research took them to more than 6,300 communities across the United States in search of barbecue establishments. The research allowed Apartmentguide.com to calculate the percentage of barbecue establishments to the total number of restaurants in each community and determine the cities with the highest ratio of BBQ restaurants.

Columbus was ranked number 21 on the list. The research showed that 7.40% of restaurants in the city limits of Columbus are barbecue restaurants. That ratio means that with Columbus' population coming in at 194,160 residents, there are 13.14 barbecue restaurants for every 100,000 people in the city.

The only city in Georgia with a higher ratio was the Atlanta suburb of Smyrna, which ranked 9th on the list. In the city of Smyrna, 8.90% of restaurants are barbecue businesses. The city has a population of 56,706 residents. Other Georgia cities that made the list were Albany at #31, Marietta at #37 and Macon at #42.

Across the river, in Alabama, the city of Decatur located near Huntsville was ranked at #6. The city of 54,264 residents has 22.11 barbecue joints for every 100,000 residents in the city or about 9.77% of their local restaurants are barbecue businesses. Other Alabama cities that made the list include Birmingham at #23, Montgomery at #25 and Mobile at #40.

The top barbecue destination in America was listed at Memphis, Tennesse with 12.09% of its total restaurants coming in as barbecue restaurants. Carrying a population of 650,618 residents that means that there are 21.83 barbecue restaurants per 100,000 residents in the city.

Columbus barbecue has been in the national spotlight before. In 2007, Chester's BBQ which has locations on Veterans Parkway, as well as Northstar Drive, won a Steve Harvey Hoodie Award for best BBQ in the nation. Chester's continues to be one of the Fountain Cities top BBQ destinations.

Columbus' diverse selection of barbecue businesses also means the city has a wide selection for local tastebuds with numerous styles of sauces being located in the city to include vinegar and mustard-based sauces as well as less traditional sauces such as Alabama White Sauce. Columbus diners now have a chance to embark on some of the best barbecue selections in the United States right in our own back yard.

Old Chicago Pizza and Taproom opened its doors at 11:00 a.m. on Monday morning at a newly constructed location at 6581 Whittlesey Blvd. in Columbus. Over the past week leading up to the big grand opening the business had announced through various outlets of social media that it would be giving away free pizza for one year to the first 100 customers in line at the business when it opened its doors.

A handful of residents arrived at the business before daybreak on Monday, bringing folding chairs and blankets with them as they anxiously awaited the opening of the new business and their opportunity to receive a coupon book with coupons good for a free pizza a month for the next twelve months.

The line quickly wrapped around the business and to the opposite side of the building before 10:00 a.m. as dozens of residents from near and far came to get a taste of the newest pizza in Columbus and the opportunity to receive that same delightful taste for the next 12 months.

Shortly before 11:00 a.m. before the doors of the business officially opened, owners of the business from Shiv Restaurant Management were along side the management team and staff at the business to celebrate the grand opening of the new business. Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson was also on hand and expressed her congratulations to the owners of the business and expressed that this is the only Old Chicago Pizza and Taproom in the state of Georgia and highlighted on how this city will be able to show the rest of the state how to do it.

A line stretches wrapped around Old Chicago Pizza & Taproom in Columbus on Monday morning ahead of the opening of the new business.

LANETT, AL: If you have ever been in Lanett and asked the locals where you should eat, you have most likely heard of Newt's Fried Chicken. The famous local eatery which once had four eateries across east Alabama and west Georgia has closed the doors to its final Alabama location.

Newt's eatery is a famous homegrown family-owned chicken eatery. Known locally as Newt's Fried Chicken and also Newt's Food Machine. The business opened its doors in August of 1980. The business was a venture by James Newton and Linda Newton. Over the years the business spread to four locations across east Alabama and West Georgia.

Over the past several years the popular establishment has declined in locations. A little over a year ago it closed its location in nearby LaFayette in Chambers County. On August 8th the store announced it would be closing its location on Magnolia Road in Lanett. The closure is being cited to the retirement of the Newton's.

Newt's has one location presently remaining which is located in West Point, Georgia. The Newton's are saddened by the closure of the Lanett location. "This is not a goodbye, rather, see you later. We love thank and appreciate all the support through the years," said the Newtons to their customers. The Newton's also thanked all the employees and friends they have made over the nearly four decades of Newt's Fried Chicken. The Newton's also thanked the Greater Valley area for the pleasure of serving them over the years.

COLUMBUS, GA: One thing that Columbus does not have a shortage on is casual dining locations. As diners make their way to various sit down eateries across the valley quality service from the wait staff at these establishments is often overlooked. However, a new hashtag sweeping the country is slowly making its way into the Chattahoochee Valley and the Fountain City.

Earlier this summer the, "Tip the Bill" hashtag challenge began to get noticed around the United States. The challenge lets restaurant patrons take a photo of their bill with the hashtag #TipTheBillChallenge wrote across it. In addition, patrons give the server a tip in the amount of the total bill.

Noting there is a fine line between good service and the opposite, not every server, waiter, or waitress is deserving of a 100% tip, but there are a handful out there. Many of which are students working their way through college or single parents trying to make ends meet.

This image from a receipt shows how the Tip The Bill Challenge is making moves.

The correct amount to tip on a dining tab to a server is between 18%-20%. However, higher tips are well deserved sometimes. This is just the latest in a long line of charitable acts seen across the Chattahoochee Valley. that have included acts like the Pay It Forward movement or the ever popular cover the tab of a first responder.

According to servers we spoke with around the Chattahoochee Valley on Tuesday, it has become popular for patrons to tip 10% of the bill. Example it the bill is $30 most will leave $3. Servers tell us this is a waste of their time and they generally find it hard to make an affordable living on this type of tip. We were told at various restaurants that restaurants charge wait staff a certain percentage of their gross sales to give to buss boys, bartenders, and hosts. So on the $3 tip on $30 they only see about a dollar while their companies take the remainder.

So the next time you go out to eat take in mind that this is the new current movement. Make sure you tip your waiter or waitress 100% snap a photo and share it on your social media platform.

COLUMBUS, GA: Residents of the Chattahoochee Valley know the local region is home to some of the most unique tastes in the Peach State and the southeast region. Dining options across the metro span from farm to table themes to good ole' southern style home cooking and the flavorful southern barbecue that covers the region. So many local restaurants in the area it gets hard to notice some of the best ones and flavors that standout, but the Georgia Department of Tourism's Economic Development division announced the top 100 plates in the state last week and a few local dishes made the list.

The "100 plates locals love" was initially published in 2015 and has continued to grow in popularity. Today the publication has grown to 187,000 printed copies of Georgia Eats and over 62,000 website hits. Now with the numbers aside the question becomes what are some of the local dishes that made the list this year?

The first comes from a well-dated and popular downtown eatery. Ruth Ann's Restaurant. The popular diner style restaurant which prides itself on the slogan, "Get Downhome In Downtown", sits at the corner of Veterans Parkway and 10th Street. In the shadow of the Columbus Government Center some of the most flavorful food in Columbus cooks under the modest roof of the eatery. Despite the various soul food and breakfast themed items that make Ruth Ann's a treasure to Columbus, the dish that made the list is actually a sweet treat.

Ruth Ann's Red Velvet Pancakes.

Ruth Ann's Red Velvet Pancakes were picked as one of the top 100 locals love. The signature pancakes to the eatery are a sweet treat to those who visit the business. The signature pancakes that taste like Red Velvet Cake with a sweet cream cheese drizzle and topped off with whipped cream and nuts are a great way to start the morning or go into the afternoon at Ruth Ann's, which does serve breakfast items all day.

A drive up Interstate 185 into Harris County will get locals another of the Chattahoochee Valley's great tastes. Hunter's Pub and Steakhouse sits hidden off of Exit 25 in Hamilton, Georgia. The cozy and humble steakhouse which is open Tuesday thru Sunday sits hidden from motorist on the freeway by trees, but the recipes at the humble steakhouse are well-known to locals throughout west Georgia and east Alabama.

Hunter's Pub Peanut Butter Pie

While many would think that one of the signature steak recipes of Hunter's Pub would make the list, it was actually a dessert at the business that made the top 100 locals love list. Hunter Pub's Peanut Butter Pie was one of the top dishes in the state according to the list. The pie is listed as perfect with just the right amount of filling, that is not overly sweet.

Another Harris County eatery also made the list. Pine Mountain's, Carriage and Horse Restaurant made the list. The restaurants Filet Mignon and Lobster Tail was selected as one of the top dishes of locals. The tender-cooked filet is only the tip of the dish, which is followed up closely by a cooked to perfection lobster tail with just a hint of sweetness.

A LaGrange eatery also made the list. The Brickhouse Grille and Tavern in LaGrange made the list with its Drunken Fried Chicken Sandwich. The solid chicken sandwich with Wasabi Honey Mustard created a flavor that has caught the taste buds of critics around the state.

The list was made up of several restaurants across the state including some nearby in locations such as Montezuma and Thomaston. While the list had only room for a few signature dishes we around Columbus know that this area has some of the best local eats in the state.
